Tom of Finland, a biopic of an iconic man in gay erotica, coming soon

Peccadillo Pictures just announced that Tom of Finland will be playing in British cinemas starting August 11th. This Finnish drama by award-winning filmmaker Dome Karukoski tells the story of an iconic man in gay erotica named Touko Laaksonen also known as Tom of Finland.

It all starts with Tuoko Laaksonen (played by Pekka Strang) leaving the army after serving his country in World War II. But life after the war isn’t as peacefull as you would expect. In post-war Helsinki homosexuals are persecuted and are pressured to marry women and have children.

In all this Touko finds refuge in his liberating art, especially in his homoerotic drawings of muscular men. His works which was made famous by his signature ‘Tom of Finland’ became the emblem of a generation.

Tom of Finland is received very well by critics as it won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Göteborg Film Festival and is nominated as Best International Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Besides Pekka Strang the film stars Lauri Tilkanen, Niklas Hogner, Jan Böhme among others.
